So, I’ve tried about thrice to get this out now, but Tumblr has had some issues. If you’re seeing this for a second, possibly third time, I apologize.
Here is some Homestuck for everyone. John and Karkat in princely sort-of garb. I’ve been rather busy with the new term lately and with all the separate projects I’ve lined up, including two children’s books and something extra special involving Homestuck. Then there are all the prints, stickers, key chains, and the mini-backpacks I decided were, somehow, a good idea to try my hand at. And everything else… So how tired is the rest of the world out there?

I borrowed this book from the library the other day and experienced some awkward silences and stares as I proceeded to look through it in public. I sat at a bench outside one of the universities buildings, and though it felt strangely appropriate to the imagery and the underlying reasons for the work to have done so, it was so incredibly awkward.

The images following the link maybe disturbing to some people, so be prepared or don’t look.

When I first encountered Mariel Clayton’s work, like most people I suspect, I was drawn in by these elaborate little set ups, and the utterly taboo nature of the Barbies’ situations. On one level it might bring up issues of ownership, as she is corrupting a symbol that has generally been set as a standard for womanhood to young girls. But, Mariel’s work strikes a cord that resonates with truth despite her likely exaggerations. People like this exist, though we may not like to think on it. And the Barbie little girls play with, does not.

I don’t mean to condone any of the “actions” taken by the Barbies, only to point out that their underlying messages deal with real issues, if not always in their positions alone. I have been looking at some aspects of the work in a metaphorical sense that others may not agree with and which has been difficult to put into words.

The Garden of Cosmic Speculation is at Portrack House, near Dumfries in South West Scotland. It is a private garden created by Charles Jencks.  The garden is inspired by science and mathematics, with sculptures and landscaping on these themes, such as Black Holes and Fractals.
